CUK Christmas Holiday

Having thought about this at some length, I'm not sure this holiday is really a good idea. It may be that these people caused grief on the other forum, although having reviewed the posts there it seems to me to have been six of one and half-a-dozen of the other. The further bad behaviour that TheFaQQer describes is clearly unjustifiable, although I don't have access to the evidence for that, and I'm not sure it matters if I do or not.

It does feel very much like we're being exhorted to go round and smash somebody else's place up because of a third party's grievance. Such excursions as the caravan forum and the various others were, I believe, just random nonsense, whereas this has the nasty smell of being asked to carry out a revenge attack (as AtW pointed out).

To those who say it's just a bit of fun, I have to say that the same justification is used by those who commit virtually all acts of vandalism.

To those who say that it will somehow be helpful to the targeted forum because (as has already been claimed) it forces them to introduce measures such as approving new accounts: well, that's rather like saying that it's OK to go through the unlocked back door of an old lady and shout "BOO!" behind her armchair. No permanent harm may be done; but you have still caused alarm and distress for no particular reason other than showing off your self-proclaimed superiority. If the old lady locks her door in the future, it won't be with a sense of gratitude to you for having reminded her of the importance of home security, but with a lurking sense of fear that somebody may come to harm her. To justify your behaviour on the grounds that it changed her behaviour is merely self-congratulatory justification of an act that you know, in your heart, to be wrong.

I've never participated in any of these holidays because they have always struck me as juvenile vandalism, causing hassle to people who have done nothing to deserve it.

The fact that, on this occasion, somebody feels that these people have done something to deserve it, but in a context that has absolutely no bearing on any other member of CUK, takes it out of the realms of idiotic behaviour and into the realms of malice. And for that reason, I will not be participating.

    Just my GBP0.02.

EDIT: Although it looks like you may all be disappointed on Monday anyway:

HIGH PRIORITY MAINTENCE SCHEDULED FOR MONDAY 7TH DECEMBER 09

I have locked the forum to posting whilst we transfer our system to a nice shiny new system.

The entire process will take roughly 24-48 hours to complete and you may experience erratic behaviour throughout this time.

There's an interesting comment here on the Chutney Spoon blog that I won't bother quoting so it doesn't come up in a Google search.
My all-time favourite Dilbert cartoon, this is: BTW, a Dumpster is a brand of skip, I think.
