I did Quantum Mechanics at degree level if that counts.

The most interesting theory I've heard about the reason why the collider keeps breaking down is that the Higgs Boson doesn't want to be discovered so keeps coming back from the future to sabotage the machine.

As for black holes, colliding particles do not cause them. A black hole needs mass, and lots of it, to generate the gravity required to stop light escaping. Bouncing a few nano-particles off each other is not going to give this result. At least not in the conventional way. The only way I can think of such a scenario happening is if somehow they break into an alternate and opposite reality where the anti-particles from the alternate universe draw particles from our universe together fast enough to gain the critical mass. I think you can imagine the odds of that happening.

If there was any chance at all should they be meddling? I remember reading about the first atomic bomb experiments where some scientists said there may be a small chance that the earth's atmosphere could be set on fire but it should be ok. ... wtf?

I`m a fully trollified physisisisiscist and mathematictictictictician . Yes a probability exists that hole will appear and we`ll all be swallowed up, some before others. The obese may survive however. I`m hoping for some alien females, hairless and cute will appear however.
