When a thread is posted along the lines of:
I would not have thought it too likely that the team members, their coach nor their manager would pop in to CUK just before the whistle is blown to check they are getting the support their morale requires to achieve victory.
Indeed, I doubt they check many online fora, but in particular, one that specialises in stop-at-home, beer-swilling, middle-aged, probably-lacking-in-social-skills, contract IT types seems even less relevant to their needs at that pre-match moment.
So what is the point of a "We're gonna win the Erica James rosebowl!" post on this forum?
It cannot possibly have any effect upon the performance of the players. Nor can anyone really believe it will somehow have an impact on the outcome in any way whatsoever. Never has it been recorded that the All-Surbiton Crochet Championships have turned on the need to patch one's free anti-virus software.
So what is the point other than to force a random opinion upon unsuspecting passers-by who would otherwise not be interested. If they were, they would be waving their flag at the event or watching it on channel 749 in eager anticipation or awaiting Thursday's delivery of the Tring Bugle to read about the outcome on page 23.
It seems to me to be much the same as the graffiti scrawled upon bus shelters: "MUFCOK" (which I thought was a sexual reference for many years) or "GB 4 TB 2gether 4ever" or "Felicity aspires to dollymoppery". It is put there by an individual who holds a view that many others are unaware of and this causes frustration in the individual. This prompts them to publicise their view in the hope it will catch on and, in some magical way, change the Universe to deliver the outcome they desire.
However, instead they have a different outcome. They give the impression that community assets are there to be abused for nefarious purposes by rather than their generally assumed function. This causes disquiet amongst the majority of users and the asset falls into disuse, disrepair and finally, disposal. That is: the bus shelters are removed, park playgrounds are taken down, small railway stations are closed.
So, from the random scrawlings of frustrated individuals does the entire community suffer.
In the CUK context we are subjected to threads that generally descend into nationalism, racism and general abuse: and the sports related threads are the worst offenders.
And, just as the municipal authorities employ someone to remove these random ramblings of the sad and lonely, so I suggest should the authorities monitor and cleanse CUK of similar irrelevancies.
So there is my argument. I propose and suggest that sport-related threads are graffiti and the mods and admins should routinely and regularly move all sport related threads to Light Relief where they belong.
Come on you beiges!
Let's give those heliotropes a kicking in the All-In Skipping Internationals!
