It's a bit to awkward and potentially embarrassing to do even fairly basic car servicing on the street, especially when are learning as you go along, Haynes manual in one hand and torch in another, and one eye on the traffic. I have changed disc and drum brake pads as a teenager though.

...Driving along with the handbrake half on will clean them up (a bit).

Unless the handbrake works on a drum internal to the disc (Most Subarus fro example)

I used to do all my own car repairs on the road back in the day before I had drive/garage - including paint spraying.

Even tried doing a gearbox once but gave up when the car kept trying to fall off the stands to due the camber of the road

[@ the OP] if you do scrap the car, why not just get another Mondy and use the old one for spares - particularly as it has a rebuilt engine in it?

I've nowhere to put it off road and my street is too busy to contemplate doing car mechanics.

What I'd like is something:-

- Under 2 - 3K
- Small(ish). Hatchback preferably
- Easy and cheap to repair and service
- Reasonably nippy

So for personal repairs it's not illegal in itself unless the neighbours start to take exception to it.

Why don't you just do a search on autotrader?

Select price range, distance from you, hatchback, etc.

Jap cars are not cheap to repair but don't break very often. A Focus is pretty cheap to repair and service, but hasn't got the reliability of say a Honda Civic.

Just avoid french and italian cars and you should be okay.

Typical ignorant f’wit police. They don’t quote any law statute. If there was I am sure they woulf quote it. I doubt if there is a law forbidding it other than trying to encompass it under other laws.
