Keep the car - what else could you get for £500 ?

Spending £1k-£2k on something else just gives you a different set of problems and a history you know nothing about.

That "new" car might need £500 spending on it next MOT!

Gawd, just after I phoned them to say I would be collecting and scrapping it. Tempt me not. Confused (possibly ex, but wavering) Mondeo owner.

Well, the same happened to me last year. I kept my car. This year it sailed through the MOT. Cheap motoring !

Yeah, I had the same last year, or perhaps it was the year before, when the cam belt went and took the engine with it. I had the engine rebuilt by a proper engineering firm (£800, but turned out free for reasons not worth going into here), and the engine works great. As you say it can be cheap motoring. Definitely wavering.

            Right, listen to me.

Get another MOT done and another quote at another back street garage.

If the cost is a lot less, get it done. If not, look at other aspects like, are the tyres nearly worn, what's the exhaust looking like, do you need a bigger or smaller car, etc. If yes, scrap and buy another banger with 12 months MOT, if not, toss a coin.

What could you sell it for on ebay with 12 months' MOT? You could probably get the £500 back!

Ha what am I? An advocate for cars which find themselves on death row?

The car was written off a year ago. A bizarre thing happened. I had my car towed away to an engineering firm when the cam belt failed a year or so ago. While under their care, a van smashed into it and his insurers wrote it off and gave me a cheque which covered having the repairs fixed (by a top bloke the firm recommended) plus the engine repair, just about. So as an insurance write-off I don't think my car has much if any resale value.

Ah, that's probably the key fact on which this case turns.

Mondeo it was nice knowing you ...

I might well take the Dim's advice and have another garage take a quick look. Free hopefully.
