I didn't do the deep stuff. I used a hand made drill and never went deeper than 20m simply because the drill and ice were too heavy for 2 people to lift deeper than that.

I do however know that one of the lubricants still used are liquid CFC's, which still makes me giggle as it sits inert under the ozone hole.

And I'm guessing you are now googling questions.

You used a hand-drill in the Antartic to gain core samples for what? Do you have any idea how long it takes to deposit 20 metres of ice in that climate. What trends were you considering Global Warming since spring ????
