Shall I put the heating on?

No, try and go the whole winter without using the heating.

Tonight is a bit nippy though and the rain feels as if it's not far off freezing.

Depends if it will cost more than the price of a bottle of Scotch to heat your house this evening.

You could always go round to a friends house and benefit from their heating (and drink?) thus save a bit of cash.
