Fixing a bug before it gets noticed by the customer is proactive in a good way, though I'm sure in many companies you'd not get treated that way...
PM: you are late on this task because you decided to go and make changes elsewhere?
Contractor: I spotted an important bug and fixed it
PM: was this bug in the bug-tracker?
Contractor: no, but I realised it would...
