So what goes on? Do you have to wear leather shorts and sing oom,pa,pa?

          No probs mate.
I lived in Munich for 5 years and have attended Oktoberfest or the Stuttgart version for the last 11 years.

There is so much more to say and no time to say it.

I would try the tents I have recomended. I would also recomend the Hacker Pschorr tent too. The others tend to be more traditional and are probably not what you are looking for (sorry if that is too much of a generalisation)

Another tip. The U-Bahn gets a bit lively. Try and find a walking route if you can or the S-Bahn and walk. The Hauptbahnhof is close. I would also suggest Donnersbergerbrucke and follow the crowds.

Basically, yes. But when you're that hammered it somehow seems like a really good idea.

Beer is no doubt an essential precursor to performing the oom,pa,pa convincingly.

I go to lots of beer festivals and like my real ale. Oktoberfest sounds like a nightmare and a total waste of time. The website says it so busy you might not even get in the tents! Whats the point ?

Hit Munich and many great bars.... and sod off Oktoberfest...

The point is that it is Oktoberfest, the first and the best. You can go to the local pub for a quiet drink any time (if it hasn't closed due to lack of customers). And the beer halls in Munich are also packed during Oktoberfest. But Oktoberfest isn't so crowded that you can't get plenty of beer and have a massive party, and then go on the rollercoasters whilst completely bladdered (as opposed to a bouncy castle at the local pub).

Oktoberfest is not like any beer festival you have been to. It is not a bunch of anoraks sipping halfs of real ale where you can hear the crowd whispering hoppy or nutty or fruity and look at blah blah blah.

It is a huge, and I can not describe how huge, piss up. It is a mega party.
I could ramble on for ages about how good it is and still not do it justice.

It is the only place where German um pa music is acceptable.
There is a surprising variety of music played and you should join in standing on the benches and singing along (even if you dont know the words).

It does get busy. I was at the first Saturday last year and all the tents had queues outside by 11:30. Considering they do not open till 11 and some have seating for 9,000 people that is quite something. Yes, that is 9,000 seats in one tent (or on its veranda) and there are 12 tents though most are not that big.
We went on the fair and went back at 13:00 and found seats. A lot of Germans go to the parade on the first 2 days and then the fest so it gets really busy aft 15:30 or so. There is a lull just after the early birds have had lunch.
Germans go for a couple of hours then go home. They ar not like Brits, Saffas, Kiwis and Yanks who tend to stay all day and get mortal.

Anybody who likes a beer and a party owes it to themselves to go to Oktoberfest at least once.

These days I go to a different fest but I love Oktoberfest.
