I find myself in the unenviable position of having to fill 3 hours in central Swindon on Monday.

Go and visit Avebury & its stone circle. Nice pub there too. You could also visit Silbury Hill which is nearby.

I used to work at a well known building society on the edge of Swindon & it was a 15 minute drive from there traffic permitting, so 3 hours would be more than enough time.

Not the Red Lion in Avebury. Bloody awful pub last time I was there (18 months ago?)

It should be a spectacular pub given the location, but it's always been awful.

First time I went was in 1978, beer was rubbish, food was cold, staff were rude.

My 2008 visit confirmed that the service at the Red Lion was as timeless and unchanging as the stones.

I do like Avebury though, but the road is often very busy between there and Swindon, so I'd probably just get there and it would be time to go back.

The 'ghosts' are just poor souls from 1935 still waiting to be served.

It looks the part, but it's a shyte pub.

SERIOUS suggestions about what to see in Swindon???? Must admit I have only been there twice on visits but I think the Swindon City sign must be the highlight. On leaving.

PS Especially these days - SAY NO MORE!.

Although it is quite near the Winnersh Triangle where many ships have mysteriously gone missing. Including the Cutty Sark.
