It comprised mostly of boards of fossil pictures and people chatting enthusiastically around them, and I expect talks came later. Can't say I'd be as keen to go to an IT conference.

I've been to a users group meeting once.
Not something I ever plan to do again, could have gained more spending the same amount of time sat at home googling the subject matter (and the company would have been better).

Is it actually the work or the people/setup that you dislike about work, for example if you were developing/writing whatever your you do on this project on your own, and was able to make your own decision on the way the project going /or even which project you are working on would you still hate the work? If you think you’d be passionate about what you do and able to produce a much better quality work if you didn’t have all the people and politics around you, then I guess you do like your job, it’s just you are amongst arse holes. If you think you’d hate the job even if everything was on your own terms, then I advise you to find an alternative career that you’d be passionate about even if you had to put up with arse holes.

I've had that several times. Unfortunately the inevitable comes and office pillock-ticks or budgets heave into view.

I used to enjoy them, but that was before we'd heard of this internet thingy. They were a brilliant source of direct contracts back in the day - I did my first eight years as a freelancer with no agents in sight.

Ah, the joys of Commercial Software.

The members of the user groups I attended all wore business suits. We obviously managed to keep the riff-raff out.

It was a commercial software (SQL Server) users group that I attended. None of this linux/java/pearl crap
