Hmm, my engagement ring was very cheap and my wedding ring was second hand. I've been married for 18 years, I don't think an expensive ring would have made much difference.

Mr P did buy me a replacement engagement ring many years later from Turkey. It was valued over here at 8 times what he payed for it.

Jewelery is expensive in this country, if you love her and want to be with her forever just tell her a lot and appreciate her - it doesn't need expensive baubles.
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

A friend of mine researched on the internet and bought the ring over the internet. Had it valued (for insurance, obviously ) at much more than he paid.

Platinum is definitely worth paying extra for if you're buying a good quality diamond - it's much harder and will last forever. 18 ct. gold is quite soft and bendy. The claws on my (white gold) ring wore down and I had to have it completely re-set - in platinum - I was lucky not to lose the stone completely.

Didnt Warren Buffett spend 6 weeks money and suggest to Bill Gates he should do likewise? Would have cost him tens of millions....

Why were they both buying rings for the same woman?

It is vastly more expensive, but platinum is far more practical in a ring you want to last decades. Yellow gold is very soft (unless you get cheap low-carat rubbish) and likely to get mis-shapen over time. White gold is not that shiny so it's always plated in something that is, rhodium IIRC... the plating wears off after a few years and the ring looks much less lustrous, you'll have to have it re-plated. Silver is more durable but as everyone knows, silver is less chemically inert. It will go dull and mis-coloured and require polishing.

Platinum is the best choice for a ring that will stay shiny longer than your marriage.

When I asked G to marry me, I went to the jewellers three days after we met and asked her a day later (thankfully, she said yes) when she'd joined me in Prague on a logistic exercise (picking up my car!).

So, in true Mastercard ad style:

              - tickets LHR - PRG £400
              - 0.7carat diamond solitaire in white gold - £2700
              - look on her face on the Saturday morning - Priceless

Make one out of tin foil or spend £20 on one and give it to her. If she loves you she'll take it if not she doesn't so don't get married..

Lets face it she's carrying a sprog. She's rapidly being faced with a decision to marry you or being a single mum.

Its a bit like market economics. If the pimp knows you in a bad situation he'll knock your daily rate down. Your mrs is in a bad negotiating place therefore knock the rate down a bit.

                Boomed.

Would the Irish valuer buy at his valuation price or did he just like making people feel happy that the valuation was worthwhile? If he'd be prepared to buy wouldn't one just go on holiday to Dubai once a month rather than work?
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

I guess customs would love that.

As for the OP, nothing says I love you like a nice box from Elisabeth Duke.
