I'm not against basic medicinal treatment, but even someone with limited cogitative abilities would recognise there must be limits to how much you can spend on keeping people alive. -
If you were to cut all doctors wages to be the same as a bus drivers the UK health care system would turn private in a year. About 95% of them would simple ditch the NHS work and open private surgeries and move to private hospitals. To see a doctor you would have to pay insurance as they would have all moved with the market. There is a reason why they are paid 6 figure salaries.Originally posted by TimberWolf View PostBeing a bus driver, a postman or a coal miner isn't a cushy number either. Ask him whether he'd rather be shovelling coal for 8 hours a day and knackering up his body parts ready for old age instead of sitting in an office.
I simply cannot believe someone on a contractor forum is advocating moving to a communist payment model. Fecking lunacy.
Next time you are unwell why don't you ask for treatment from a bus driver and see what you get. A banana poultice on your melanoma.Comment

I wouldn't pick on just doctors, that wouldn't work, as wouldn't the Cuban model. Something in-between perhaps, where wages are capped at a certain maximum, a bit like in the NHS of old. We are doomed ortherwise.Originally posted by minestrone View PostIf you were to cut all doctors wages to be the same as a bus drivers the UK health care system would turn private in a year. So would you cap salaries in all jobs? private as well??Originally posted by TimberWolf View PostI wouldn't pick on just doctors, that wouldn't work, as wouldn't the Cuban model. It's a decision for society. The problem I have with doctors is that get rich off the sick and vulnerable and there's no limit on how much money can be made out those people, or their relatives. Certain safeguards and ethical standards need to be in place, and it's easy for these to get out of wack. No doubt this was recognised back when the NHS was first formed.Originally posted by minestrone View PostSo would you cap salaries in all jobs? private as well??
My opinion on capping wages in other sectors? Hmm, maybe. To an extent wages are manipulated by politians anyway - and why feel sorry for GPs in particlar? Note how your GP doesn't give a stuff that IT people's salaries are being thrown to and influenced by the global market place.Comment

Isn't that what they did to the Dentists?Originally posted by TimberWolf View PostI wouldn't pick on just doctors, that wouldn't work, as wouldn't the Cuban model. Something in-between perhaps, where wages are capped at a certain maximum, a bit like in the NHS of old. We are doomed ortherwise.
If the papers are to be believed it's essentially impossible to find an NHS dentist in most parts of the country as a result.
My private dentist, who's very good incidentally, used to see patients children on the NHS, but he dropped that a couple of years ago and is pure private now.
While the NHS is a comically bloated beaurocratic white elephant due to being used as a political football for years I'd rather we have properly paid doctors available. It's true that most of the time their treatment is to help the body fix itself, but there are plenty of cases when they have to intervene.
My youngest son managed to step in front of a 4x4 a couple of weeks ago on the way to school. Minor cracked skull with a nasty concussion, severe forehead wound, top two incisors knocked clean out and loads of other cuts and bruises. They managed to resocket his teeth, the plastics surgeons will attend to the forehead scar and the skull is mending just fine, without the skilled medics (and paramedics and Police who were on scene in 2 mins) he wouldn't have fared anything like as well.Comment

Yeah, and understandably you would likely have paid anything for prompt medical treatment at the time, though I doubt that the paramedics that help in the first critical minutes are on a great salary.Originally posted by TykeMerc View PostIsn't that what they did to the Dentists?

Dentists pay seems to have rocketed in the last decade too.Comment

You would admit that a large decrease in doctor's wages would result in a decrease in the quality of care?Originally posted by TimberWolf View PostYeah, and understandably you would likely have paid anything for prompt medical treatment at the time, though I doubt that the paramedics that help in the first critical minutes are on a great salary.

My contention is that paying them more results in worse care.Originally posted by minestrone View PostYou would admit that a large decrease in doctor's wages would result in a decrease in the quality of care?Comment
