    European Currency

My apologies if this has already been discussed before.
I am a newby after all

What are your position regarding the UK joining the European currency?

Totally anti and always have been due to the loss of economic control that it would mean. Recent events have proved, as if we didn't already know, that having control of your own currency and thus your own interest rates is paramount in avoiding the consequences of a long-lasting recession.

EU states in the Euro are now in an economic 'straight-jacket' whereby their fate is controlled by the ECB. Due to this they will not be able to make favourable unilateral decisions to stave off worsening economic circumstances and many will thus suffer worse than the UK. Ireland, Spain and Italy immediately spring to mind as being in this dangerous situation.

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

IMHO The older and closer to death a person the more anti Euro they are.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

Yeah, those places were all in excellent financial health before they joined the Euro weren't they?

I would embrace the Euro with open arms, but it's one of those issues where the sheepdog of the media has got the British public neatly rounded up and bleating their mindless indignation, so it seems pretty unlikely to happen in the near future.

Ah yes, the old "if you don't like the Euro you are brainwashed by the media and don't understand economics" garbage.

Absolutely not. I get great exchange rates with the pound.

OTOH, if the UK joined the Euro, it might drag the Euro down, and then I'd be able to take advantage of local differences.

I agree. I have maintained for over 20 years that Scotland suffers from the strait-jacket of English monetary policy. What is good for England (if the London government ever guesses it) is potentially bad for Scotland.

Is that the kind of thing that you mean?
