Eating before you drink holds the alchohol in the stomach for longer, where it is absorbed more slowly. Normally 20-30% is absorbed in the stomach and 70-80% in the small intestine.

Eating first means more is ablsorbed in the stomach over a longer period of time. This means that although your blood alchohol content will stay lower, you won't be as pissed, it continues to be released over a longer period, so you won't get pissed as fast, but you will stay pissed for longer over all.

Peak blood alchohol when you havn't eaten can occour in less than an hour. If you have eaten a large meal it may not peak untill 6 hours later.

Over all you still consume the same amount of alchohol, it just gets into your system at different rates.

The French have a lower incidence of Acute alchohol related ilnesses but their long term rates are about the same as the rest of us.

Are you a Pharmacokinetist or did you ask wikipedia?
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

I can't see how you can absorb so much if you excreet some of it with food?

            You don't.

It still gets absorbed, just over a longer period of time.

When you eat, the sphincter at the base of the stomach closes to hold the food in the stomach and allow it to be digested. Any alchohol you drink after eating also gets held in the stomach.

This alchohol gets absorbed through the stomach lining. This is not very efficient so it is absorbed relativly slowly. Normally only 20-30% of the alchohol would be absorbed in the stomach, the rest in the small intestine.

Because it is held in the stomach longer more of it is absorbed there over a longer period of time. By the time the food is digested and the sphincter opens to allow it to move into the small intestine you may have absorbed 40-50% of the alchohol over 4 or 5 hours. The remaining alchohol is absorbed through the small intestine relatively quickly and generates the peak alchohol level in the blood at this point. Because you've already been metabolishing the alchohol absorbed from the stomach in the previous few hours your final blood alchohol level will not be as high as if you hadn't eaten.

Whatever is left after the remains have moved through the bowel and are ready to be excreted will only contain trace amounts of alchohol. The overall amount you absorb is the same.

That's just a function of time, surely?

It takes time for your body to realise that it's got plenty of fluids available so it can start getting rid of some. That and the fact that Alcohol is a diuretic.
