Missing plane

The plane was an Air France owned fairly new A330.

It left radar contact off the NE coast of Brazil as normal, it failed to make contact again with air traffic control when it should have reached the north west African coast

The plane has definately gone down as it should have ran out of fuel 1hr ago

The A330 model plane has only had 2 crashes in the last 20 years

Although most major operators of 4 engined jets have implemented ETOPS for North Atlantic routes.

I thought (wrongly?) part of the deal to get north atlantic certification on twins was that operators would move towards ETOPS with new deliveries (i.e. post about '84). Also I though it was only the North Atlantic where ETOPS had to apply - subject to individual operators getting certified and monitored, because it is not only operating procedure but also airframe certification.

I didn't think these south american routes were ETOPS - though there are obviously assorted standards and these differ for each carrie aircraft combination.

Interesting IIRC the last total loss of a large airliner from a lightning strike was a 707 in about 1967
