I've been to many events with large crowds (including football as a cousin is a manic footy fan) and the only ones where I've felt threat have been football matches.
Many rugby and cricket games even have alcohol sold in the grounds and pubs open before and after the games and I've never seen even a hint of the violence and hostility that is common in football crowds. Quite a few of the fans at rugby league games are also footy fans, but the grief is absent at league games, at many league grounds a good chunk of the crowd changes ends at half time happily passing each other without knocking lumps off each other.

Call me a numpty all you like, football related violence is a fact around the world and the link Mitch posted is just another example.
I've been to tonnes of football games, and not seen any hint of violence for years. You're a few decades out of date.

You think there's something intrinsic about 11 men on a field kicking a ball around that somehow causes people to fight. I find that a bit ridiculous to be honest.

There are many things that can be linked to violence, football is just one of them. It's not the game, just a very very very small proportion of idiots that would find another excuse if football didn't exist. We're literally talking about a scores of people in the UK amongst millions of fans.

And yeah, you are a numpty if you're actually proposing banning football, because some idiots use it as an excuse. Where does that sort of action logically stop - you seriously think they'd turn into peaceful rugger bugger types if the game didn't exist? Or that somehow football fans can't mix (They have, and do - especially in pubs watching games).

Parents telling their children "we are protestants" you mean. Again, the terms are still used as meaningless labels, whether for themselves or the people on the other 'side'. I doubt many self-described protestants know what defines protestantism. Or even know the basics of Christianity in general in most cases.

Well the people who killed that bloke obviously don't care but see it as a useful vehicle for their tribalism.

                  Can you quantify that?

In quantum ecclesiastics, the Heisenberg uncertainty principle states that certain pairs of spiritual properties, like use of contraception and momentum toward the sanctuary, cannot both be known to arbitrary precision. That is, the more precisely one property is known, the less precisely the other can be known. It is impossible to measure simultaneously both birth control and velocity of confession with any degree of accuracy or certainty.

I can see where you are coming from, but where are you going with this?
