Not Luke Skywalker.
Wesley from The Princess BrideOf all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

A Welsh man born in Denbigh. His parents were unmarried and his father aledgedly an alchoholic.
At the age of 18 he made passage for the USA, jumping ship in New Orleans.
He took part in the Civil war, becoming a serial deserter on both sides.
Following the war he became a journalist and one of his first assignments was to lead a disasterous expedition to explore the Ottoman Empire.
Following this he was retained as a correspondant covering the work of the Indian Peace Commission, before being retained full time as a correspondant for the New York Herald. It was this job that would lead directly to the African expedition for which he would become most famous."Being nice costs nothing and sometimes gets you extra bacon" - Pondlife.Comment

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.
