I suspect some people don't even know they had a breakdown and put it down to stress or things getting on top of them (not meaning to trivualize things in any way). I'm pretty sure the contracting lifestyle could lend itself to having one!

The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.
But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.” -

So what are the common causes of a breakdown? I can't imaginethat I'll ever have one at this stage (I'm 32), but then I'm sure a lot of people who have, used to think that. I am interested to know the kind of things that may cause one to happen if there is indeed a reason. Several people have mentioned feeling out of control or not standing up to people. I must admit that from time to time I get myself into these situations where I think "I should have jsut told them NO when they first asked, now I'm involved in this mess"Comment

I'm pretty sure you're right here. Most people grin and bear it, as I have done many times without resort to doctors or drugs. In my moments of despair I have changed things by positive action. Once things are so bad it is worth remembering that things cannot get any worse and the only way from there is up.

I went abit loopy from around Sept last year till Feb this year at the time, feel better now but looking back think I may have had a mild breakdown, but my body went into survival mode.
First my ex of 9 years left me came back then left me again, then I lost my ICESAVE cash, then I got it back but then the IR came a knocking, then I needed to deal with selling the house in a crashing market with an ex who wanted me to buy her out for way to much, my gig was major stress at the time and I was burgled. Lost nearly 3 stone, didnt really eat but drank and smoked way to much pot, got into fights, got arrested twice for being drunk and disordely
generally was in a bad way. I zoned out totally brain just didnt want to handle any more sh*t, but also a part of my brain seemed to carry on without me
made sure I got to work and propped myself up at the desk to keep the £ comming in, I might of looked ok at my desk but inside I was a mess.
I'm ok now rode it out and defo feel stronger for it, ok I didnt have a life threating illness or something major like that, but alot of medium size issues can get on top of you.Last edited by Bumfluff; 19 May 2009, 19:21.Comment

Christ, it seems like me and Milan (and possibly Scotspine) are the only people who *haven't* had a nervous breakdown or fits of clinical depression.

Sorry, I should have said "presumably".Originally posted by scotspine View Postpossibly?
Just that your post, as I recalled it, was a simple "Crikey!" or some word to that effect, which didn't seem to entirely rule out you having had a breakdown and just being surprised that so many others had too.Work in the public sector? Read the IR35 FAQ hereComment
