Apparently Brown had a row with HMQ in his weekly meeting with her last wednesday (a "full and frank exchange of views").

Presumably it was about this expenses scandal, and in effect she told him to get a grip and start by not standing in the way of the useless Speaker being ditched.

Also, she was none too pleased when the Speaker appointed an inexperienced young lady to be Sergeant at Arms or Black Rod (I forget which) at the H of C.

No offence to the lady in question, but she hardly fits Henry VIIIth's job description for the role, namely "a gentleman famous in arms and in blood", i.e. a distinguished ex-service bod (and to this day the Queen hasn't granted her an audience, which she would normally have done).

It broke the 50 year convention that the two main parties take it in turns.
Now it's likely to be an elected post, and as we all know, that'll make things better
