That's my benchplan - whenever I'm on the bench I spend one week checking out jobs in my field and then have an increasingly large proportion of time checking out shelf-stacking etc type jobs from week two onwards.

Haven't had to take one yet, but it's been a pretty close run thing.

It can’t be such a bad thing to do a lowly job for a little while. OK, so shelf stacking is boring, but you could ask local shopkeepers if they need some help; they might need a bit of help with IT too, which you can put on your CV in a pimped up way. Perhaps your local boozer needs people part time. Supply teacher is an option if you have a degree. All these kinds of work will bring you into contact with people you might not otherwise have dealt with and what’s more, they’ll help keep the war chest intact as long as you don’t have a very lavish lifestyle.

Of course I can maintain my lifestyle pulling pints. I just do this IT lark for the sheer excitment.
