if you want food hygeine standards, goto a fully westernised country or stay in a 5 star hotel, either that or do what countless others do and take obvious precautions:

chef's idiot/cybertory guide to eating in foreign countries:

    1) if the place looks busy with locals it's because it serves good food at prices locals believe is acceptable and not crap junk that is aimed at westerners
    2) if it's busy, it therefore must also have a high turnover of food and therefore reduce the chance that food is sat around
    3) if the menu is in the local language only, great.. if there is no menu and it's full of locals, even better
    4) look at what is the most popular dish being served, point to it (unless you speak the local language), order it
    5) if the establishment is empty, avoid it
    6) if it is empty and also serves western food that's spelt very badly on the menu including lots of pictures, avoid like the plague

as for the Swine Flu, ensure you have good insurance cover (including International Recovery), take the same precautions you would in the Uk (i.e wash your hands etc.), if you feel ill, get medical help asap.

in any hot foreign country i would be far more worried about contracting malaria than swine flu..
Peversely, I'd love Chef to meet Cybercretin on his travels....

Top advice Chef, I tend to do much of that, but hadn't ever thought it through or put the points in words.

Erm...Chef hun, can I just say....this relationship is still very new. DO NOT get her used to you being a cash cow. If she can go backpacking with you on her own cash, brilliant. If not, DO NOT entertain the thought of paying for a 6 week jaunt for her.

Whatever you do though, have a great time

By the way, the friend that emailed you and said that....she's the one you should be taking.
