The first I remember was when I got access to "Compuserve" for all the techy bulletin boards - that was Mosiac ISTR, then Netscape. There was no proper Internet then for normal folks. Then all of a sudden it just "appeared". I think that was all 2400bd.

Luckily we have moved on from that.

FYI: I just made up the 20th aniversary bit. But I say bring back Mosaic!
          I forgot these too:
          Bored.

            Nah I'm mostly harmless
            But thanks for the compliment
I'm sorry, but I'll make no apologies for this

My first own PC was in 1996. ( Before then, I was using and Atari ST ). PC was a P120, with a 1GB harddrive. Had a 28k modem, and a compuspend account, so my email address was something like [email protected]

I used altavista and hotbot search engines.

Didn't really get a "wow" until 2002, having a chat via video over ip (can't even remember the software) with a friend in the US, when we finally had broadband.

Another wow was a few years ago when I had to download a DVD image, and it took 2 hours instead of 2 days...

Oh, and my internets all came via Compuserve

I also remember the days when bulletin boards were all the rage.

Compu$erve. Monthly fee plus connection time fee plus cost of phone call. Pay per email to send and to receive.

But when people had to pay to contribute to a forum, they contributed a whole lot less rubbish.

My Wow! was using Archie to find a Sinclair Spectrum simulator in St Louis and the brick game Batty for it from Chile.

Who remembers Mosaic? When exciting graphics meant ASCII pics :-) ? When all you could access was university thesisi? What was the first thing you got excited about on the internet (if it is porn you are too young to answer)?

Geocities, Angelfire and Tripod hosted web pages, Blink tags, Marquee text on the status bar, more drivel on more bulletin boards and appalling page layouts and design.
Much the same here, JANET at Uni (popular lass that Janet) then on to Archie and IRC, then Compuserve before a Demon Internet dial-up. Usenet, AltaVista, Kali, QuakeWorld, GeoCities...the rest is history.
