I sort of suspect and agree with what someone suggested to me regarding what could possibly have happened.

The father gave the child a sleeping pill, the child died and in order not to compramise the father's career and their children and their current life style the parents dumped the body and concocted a ludicrous story of kidnap/abduction.

Surely they didn't have time to dispose of the body?

I do not for a minute think the parents did it, it's the kind of gossip spread by bored houswifes down the post office or in the hairdressers. The kind that won't let their kids eat pork these days and think the Duke of Edinburgh murderer Diana. Educated just enough to read OK magazine.

In my experience the "OK magazine" readers are the ones who were putting up the "Find Maddy now posters" and believe she was abducted by a roaming paedophile. I find the parents shifty and I think they are hidding something, it's just a gut feeling.
