Just looking for some views here. I have been offered a contract that includes a clause saying the client has the right to search me and/or my vehicle at any time. I think it is pretty outrageous, even if they never actually do a search.

    It's not a secure site/MOD or anything. Thoughts ?

    Jim.
Tate and Lyles Sugars used to have this - for employees and contractors alike. I had my car checked a few times while leaving the site. When I had some company stuff, I needed the paperwork.

    I wouldn't worry about it.

What sector is the client in?

I would. Frankly, I would tell them to stick their contract where the sun don't shine.

Work is work. I'd take it and if it turned out crap, leave. Chances are it'll be ok.

Is anything made or kept there, i.e. is it a factory/storage site, or just an office?

If a client wants to search my car (on their property) they are welcome. They can clean it at the same time

              Me either.

I've had contracts like this aswell, and never actually got stopped or searched.

Look at it this way, if you've got nothing to hide, nor are you pilfering anything then you have nothing to lose. At the end of the day, if you do get stopped and/or searched, just make sure that any time spent with Plod is reflected in your time-keeping.

When I was at TLS, even the senior managers had to go along with it. Nobody gave it a second thought. I think the youth of today are far too sensitive about their alleged rights, poor darlings.

The company is an ISP. It is not a secure site as far as I know, just a normal office. Certainly the contract requires no security clearance of any kind.

It's not the possibility of being searched that bothers me so much, I just don't want to walk around the office knowing they have the right, it would be intimidating. I mean, even the Police can't search you/your car without a reason and lots of paperwork.

Thanks for the views so far.

If they thought I was stealing something they should do what normal people do and phone the police.

If they thought a few post it pads on my last week was worth it.

Personally I would tell them to f off, unless I had hungry children to feed.

Just make sure that the car you drive is not owned by you (i.e. rented). Then when they demand to search it say they can't "as its not my car"
