If you are after a Boxster, go for the post 2005 model. Looks better, and improved engine and suspension.

Hair dressers' car, but how about MX5? Great on the twisty stuff and save lots of money over the other roadsters.

classic car insurance with a max mileage of 5k for the year

sell it when you get back for what you paid for it

or something more modern, there are zillions of the 90's version for less than 10k

              Milan.
If I was in the market for a second car (parking space is limited here) I'd be very tempted by that myself, it even has the hard top for winters. I'm not a great fan of convertibles, but that model Merc has always looked nice to me.

Not convinced about their assertion that it will appreciate in value though.

                Looking to spend about 10k

You're probably far better off looking for rental agencies in Italy/France/Switzerland that will supply a suitable car. Shop around and you can probably pick and chose the make and model.

With a rental reliability isn't an issue and you will have the entertaining drive without the tedious drive to the Alpine region as you can just fly there and spend the extra time in the areas you want to visit.

I have one and it is truly a sublime car and unbelievable value for money.

I would highly recommend it however, if you have to leave it parked in the street, look out for chav dog owners allowing their dogs to piss all over the wheels !!!
