Mrs gooner and I are planing a driving trip round northern Italy and the Alps this summer as part of our month off.
I want to buy a TVR to do it in, but she's heard there not that reliable and wants something differant......what do people think ? Is a TVR a good car for this, or is there something else I should be looking at ??? We'll be doing about 3000 miles.
Looking to spend about 10k
Dim Prawn mentioned the first thing that also occurred to me - luggage, especially (not wanting to sound sexist here, but ..) if one of the passengers' names starts with "Mrs".
Driving through North Italy and the alps in a convertable sounds fantastic, but you need to watch out for guys with large bulldozers parked in tunnels
Luggage space - has to be CLK in that price bracket
Unless you fancy an older Jag XK8.
Anyone who posted an autotrader link - check you removed your postcode from the URL if you want your location to remain anon.
True, from a touring with female and luggage perspective a Merc or Jag is probably the best bet. Fairly quick, decent handling, fair size boot and they are classic Grand Tourer designs that were put together for just the sort of trip you're proposing.
Some of the other convertibles are really sports cars rather than Touring roadsters so will be less comfortable over the miles and have tiny luggage space. The 911 for instance has naff all luggage space where as a Merc has a damn big boot.
A guy I worked with on my last gig had one of the Jag soft tops, XK possibly (I can't remember which one) and that would have been ideal for the trip you've described, lovely classic British sportscar lines too.
Seen a TreVoR in a service station the other week, after filling up it took 20 seconds to start. Then it just sounded like a 250 honda with the silencer out.
Fine for the city but it would be madness taking it out the country.
I have just bought a stylish convertible for my beautiful wife. She tells me that she is really looking forward to the summer, when she can drive with her top down. I am a little worried that she might not concentrate properly when driving like that and distract other road-users. I wouldn’t like her to get extra points on her licence, but it is difficult for a gentleman to advise a lady on her driving, so I would appreciate your advice, as a lady of wide insight, to help her avoid getting into trouble while still enjoying the summer’s experience.

I wouldn’t worry too much. Yes, on the first nice day, the top will come down and she’ll be off, but she will quickly discover that not only is it always much chillier than you anticipate, but also everything flaps about in the wind. Not a comfortable experience. She won’t do it very often.
Welcome back N5G btw. How was your Mews night out?
Mews was good, if a bit on the pricy side, both of us had the 7 course menus with wine, also had champers in the bar, the total bill was circa £500 for the night, excluding taxi home. Had better, heading off to www.lindsayhouse.co.ukthis Friday which I'm looking foward to.
SA says;
Well you looked so stylish I thought you batted for the other camp - thats like the ultimate compliment!
I couldn't imagine you ever having a hair out of place!
