the missus had one installed - in the rented house in the Middle East - we left about 6 months after the 4 months installation phase had completed.

Britain is a north western European island in the Atlantic Ocean with what we call a 'temperate' climate.

That means it rains a lot. Hence, it is a very green place.

It is also heavily populated and so water shortages occur in the less rainy months.

Do the planet a favour and don't bother.

And ditto for patio heaters (which should be illegal to own as far as I can see).

Outside tap, long water hose with extensions if required.
Lay hose around the garden, hidden by bushes. Poke lots of holes in the hose.
Turn on the tap when required. Cost: very little and does not go wrong.

I had an electronic irrigation system in my villa in Cyprus. Absolutely essential there unless you only have cacti in the garden.

But for western Europe? No, you let God do the work.

PS. If you are worried by droughts, plant Mediterranean/South American/South African type plants that love a long dry summer.
