While you can argue until doomsday about what left/right mean, I have little doubt the fundamental difference is that the left wish to eradicate national borders while the right believe in the natural human concept of nationalism. What Labour is doing is entirely in keeping with the global leftist philosophy of destroying any concept of a UK identity.

First part I agree with, the left no more speak for the working class than the right - in fact it's equally possible for the 'right' to speak for them, on certain issues.

I agree, but if they want the economy to turn around they have to take some tough Thatcherite decisions. Labour move to the right to win elections and then move back to the left. The Tories will move to the left to win, and then to the right afterwards IMO, which will be good for the country.

Mandelson is scum, pure and simple. As an earlier poster said, he is simply trying to discredit the strikers.

I agree with a lot of people on this board in that language skills are key and that the education system needs to change to address this. I think it is as my kids learn french from their first year in primary school. I didn't. It would be useful to have to take a language at GCSE level. We didn't have to in the early to mid 80's when I was at school so I dropped them as soon as I could.

When I was a scaley-brat I lived in germany and learnt some of the language. When I was a crab I worked in Italy and learned some of the language. I am now learning Italian at night school as only I can make that change...

You give the Italians and Portugese British contracts, and then they're British. Tax rates are roughly the same. The only difference, when they're laid off they'll receive British benefits.

When you apply for a job you don't give them your nationality. The same applies in Germany. Applied for loads of jobs, never actually stating that I'm British.
