It’s besides the point. British industry has failed because of poor government policy, poor industrial education and an over-valuation of pseudo-professions like Media Studies instead of proper jobs making stuff. That means that the decision makers are now French and not British.

Cop out - I was enjoying reading the contest of well balanced arguments and bigoted vitriol.

          Oh well back to work...

You mean you want the people who f**ked up to clear up the mess?

Go ahead, choose protectionism. See what happens 10 years down the line when the rest of the world has moved on and British business is once again dominated by hard left unions, government cronyism, jobs for the boys and backward, low quality overpriced products.

You seem to be missing the irony of what is going on here. It seems that the Italians are forming their own "protectionism" by not making these jobs available to local people, with the extra irony being that if the situation were the other way around (Brits winning a contract in Italy and shipping out only Brit workers".)

Now whilst I accept that the italians, being part of the EU are doing nothing wrong by the letter of the free market, they dont seem to be adopting any of the spirit of the law.

Who precisely "f***ed up"? are you saying that the workshy Italians are likely to supply better workers?

As far as media studies is concerned, you may not understand this but the world has changed and media studies are now an important educational topic.

Erm, yes. Take a look at the regions around Milan, Turin, Bellinzona and Bologna; you’ll see a hell of a lot of industry. Cars, kitchen appliances, high speed trains, aircraft parts, instrumentation, industrial machines, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, bicycles and all the ancilliary industries that are needed by Northern Italian industry. Not exactly workshy. In fact I think you’ll find that Northern Italy is one of the world’s richest and most successful industrial regions. Economic figures in Italy are skewed by the basket case that Italy becomes as soon as you go south of Rome. The north is rich, successful and highly productive. The south is well, the less said about that the better.

Agreed !! My experience is that there are very few jobs open to foreigners in Italy, especially in IT.
