There was an interesting article on that somewhere recently.

The authors' theory, which seems quite plausible to me, was that most women are instinctively drawn to type A personalities because in the distant past the "self-obsessed cretins" couldn't fake it as they can more easily today (without getting a thumping or worse from the *real* Alpha males, which the women of those times fancied more because they offered better security for raising offspring and better genes for physical and mental prowess).
