What is a unique visitor? Is it an ip address? If 250k visits in a month does that mean 250k ip addresses?

I guess it's a good way to get people to visit your site. Anyone know his username on cuk?

        Yes, I believe so.

If you ask AtW nicely he can remove Contractor Calculator from SKA and then their unique visitors will fall to about 10 a year. pwned!.

How I read the bit about cookies is that even if you are coming in via a DHCP connection (i.e. potentially a different IP address for each visit), you will only be counted once. On the other side of the coin, anyone visiting a website from both work and home (assuming not the same laptop for both locations) is going to count as 2 unique visitors unless they login using the same username at both locations.
Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.

It seems that ContractorCalculator have got a CEO. Is there a CEO for CUK? If not, can I be it?

            Thanks.

Just to be clear: when I refer to "logging in" below, I mean logging in to (for example) Windows, not logging in to CUK.

As Google Analytics uses cookie-based tracking, a "unique visitor" is generally an individual person. If, for example, user Fred logs in and visits CUK, then Fred's user account on that computer (or AD domain, or whatever) will have a unique cookie set, which will be presented to the server on each of his subsequent visits so as to distinguish him from any other visitor.

If Fred then logs out and somebody else uses the same computer to log in on user account Mary, and Mary then visits CUK, Mary will receive a separate cookie and will be identified as a different visitor to the site, even though she is using both the same IP address and the same physical computer.

If you are on a network with roaming profiles, and you use a different physical machine with a different IP address to log in as user Fred and visit CUK, you will not count as a different visitor, as Fred's CUK cookie is part of his roaming profile, and will be recognised as belonging to a previous visitor.

This doesn't take account of the same person visiting using a different browser (as that will have its own collection of cookies), or of the same person visiting from a different local user account (you will be seen as two separate visitors if you visit from work, and from the distinct user account on your computer at home). On the other hand, it also doesn't work for visitors who have JavaScript (which is used to set the cookie) disabled, or whose firewall or proxy removes JavaScript. Nor does it take account of users who disable or delete their cookies.

Overall, it is generally accepted that these reasons why one individual may be tracked as two or more unique visitors, while another individual isn't tracked as a visitor at all, tend to balance out over the long run. As mentioned in ContractorUK's post above, ABCe accepts the validity of the tracking process implemented by Google Analytics for the purpose of providing a reasonably accurate figure for unique visitors.
