I think that the move to contracting for me has been a good one. I have had to review this in the last few weeks as I was offered a perm position in my current contract.
I discussed it with my significant other and we decided that we were better off contracting. When I turned down the perm job I was offered an extension so result there.
Holidays - now there is something. I don't take holidays at the start of a project and I dont take holidays when I am not in a contract and then there is the project and so on.....
I remember being a manager and pushing out 60 hours a week and weekends and there being nothing extra for the effort apart from more work. Oh yes and not being able to take all your holidays.
I get my pension subsidised by the tax man.
I get into a new project with the latest toys every year and my skills are bang up to date.
Lets not forget the cash, after all that is why we go to work. When I worked last weekend it was double time. I grossed more for the weekend than the perm guys net in a month.
I have had periods of no work, I have worked in places where they did not like contractors, I have worked on projects that were doomed and I have dealt with agents who were fresh out of double glazing school and as wide as the channel.
Over all contracting is a winner for me and mine.
