    Yes.

    There is no such thing as job security - unless you are some sort of civil servant but I value my brain too much to do that.

    Financially, I'm not a big earning consultant, but I'm still better off.

    The big plus is the broader experience. Like most contractors, I've worked at many different firms and places, and with loads of different people.

    There are downsides. I don't take as many holidays as I should, and looking around for new work at the end of a contract can be a pain.

      I've seen much of the rest of the world. It is brutal and cruel and dark, Rome is the light.

        That was what the legion soldiers used to say to Cesar when they were going to battle.
        I was under the impression it was a gladiator thing, where is Spartacus when you need him.
        I am not qualified to give the above advice!

            Yep it was a gladiator salute. But said that it was used in the battles too. Anyway, I said B- not A+.

              nihil illigitimi carborundum
              To be picky (again...) it's illegitimi, and to please the purists, it's dog latin for "Don't let the bastards grind you down".

              OK, how about "hic ludus militis fornicate" then...
              Blog? What blog...?

                Hic = this (?)

                ludus = game

                militis from militia, soldier

                fornicate = sh@g (fornicatio s.n.)

                ????

                  I have apologised twice today, once for spelling and once for bad latin, dont be so picky!

                  "hic ludus militis fornicate" usualy followed by "anybody fancy a pint" v.funny.

                    You called?

                    It's origin is not clear but it is believed to date back to the early days of gladiatorial contests ("munera"), which were held as part of the festivities of a funeral. Some have hypothesised that it might have originated as a formal means of saluting the (already) dead. In the days of the republic, gladiatorial contests were rarely fatal and as they were intended simply as a demonstration of fighting skill, even serious injury was rare. The thumbs up / thumbs down brutality of the empire was a long way in the future. Gladiators were a serious investment and the death of a good one was a serious blow to the stable owner.

                    On top of all this, there is only one recorded use of it in the classical sources (chapter 21 of Suetonius' "Life of Claudius") and that was by galley slaves addressing the emperor. So really it is far from certain that it was ever used as a gladiatorial salute at all.
