I know a guy who lost his rather ordinary sales job recently and his wife is extremely concerned for his health, I just don’t understand the permy mentality of it all, people will move their family and uproot kids from school etc all because of a poxy job with a company that they wrongly assume gives a sh1t about them.

As a contractor you develop a thick skin as getting benched is an occupational hazard, I don’t understand why people get so attached to something that should be just a vehicle to make money? Bloody wimps.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

I agree with the bit about 'permy mentality' and the false sense of security that people take from having a permy contract, but they aren't wimps; they're institutionalised through working in huge corporations. They've been decieved into believing that their 'career' is in their own hands and has anything to do with merit. In many cases, they need professional help to see that they have something to contribute outside of the Big Boring Corporation.

I agree with you, and anybody in a sales job should really be aware that it is just about the riskiest area to work in.
My brother-in-law was out of work a year ago and kept it quiet from everybody bar my sister for six months until he found another job. It was obviously a real pride issue with him, and when I found out I told him that there is no stigma from being out of work as far as I am concerned, but I could understand his attitude because some people do like to gloat over other's failures. When I am out of work it is an opportunity for a long holiday and a chance to hone skills ready for the next opportunity that comes along.

That's like blaming dealers for supplying the junkies. The junkies want the drugs!

We - you Mitch, me, your friends, everyone - wanted the cheap credit. Lashings of it so we could buy overpriced houses, new cars, high-end gadgets and dine at Gordon Ramsays.

If the bankers had said no, we would have gone elsewhere to find it!

The general consumer needs to take their own share of the blame in this as well, for not being prudent spendthrifts and forgetting the old maxim of "Income 5s expenditure 4s 11d; result hapiness. Income 5s, expenditure 5s 1d, result misery".
When money ceases to be the tool by which men deal with one another, then men become the tools of men. Blood, whips and guns--or dollars. Take your choice - Ayn Rand, Atlas.

Dealers get much longer jail sentences than junkies because they profit from misery of others.

Moi? No, I've never taken out a lot of credit, but I understand your point that consumers share something of the blame. Thing is, most people are not really very good with money, and the 'experts' have a responsibility to advise them sensibly.

Of course you are wrong in your drug analgy. Dealers offer freebies to people to make them junkies.
