My garden is pretty big, about 30m * 10M which boils down to 3m^2 per person per week which should be plenty, you could probably live on half that.

I've got a 30x10 strip at the backend which could be used for this.

are you gonna dig it all yourself or buy a diesel rotavator / small tractor ?

      Milan.

A tractor for 300m2? Forget it. Just get out with a spade and dig. If need be (if you're a southern woofter with no muscles) you can hire a small rotavator for a day.

          Should grow reasonable spuds though.
I seem to remember planting spuds is really hard work. Remember many a back breaking day helping my dad. Plus they take upa lot of space. Better stick to cabbage (winter and spring), sprouts, turnips and the like.

Also a small greenhouse for tomatoes and cannabis would be worth while considering. Or maybe a larger greenhouse and plant half of it with soft fruit like strawberries.

I don't think growing your own stuff is much cheaper, it just tastes loads better. It also needs to be one of your main hobbies.

Get a rotovator, breaking fresh ground with a fork is never easy. Could take you a couple of days where a rotovator will do a much better job in a few hours. It should be done a couple of times for best results, wait a week inbetween.

Will turnips provide carbohydrates as effectively as spuds?

Mrs BP and I got an allotment 4 years ago. Had to give it up after a month. My back has never been the same since.

Richmond council have closed the waiting list for an allotment. It's currently a 4 year wait.

When I start I will probably just hand dig a couple of raised beds and build up over a few years. Get a greenhouse as well.

                      Just need a house first.
