People speeding on motorways should try working out the futility of the exercise. You gain little by driving at 90 mph rather than 75 (75/90=0.83), unless you are covering huge motorway distances, but your fuel costs are much higher. Even less time is saved when slow sections, getting to and from the motorway, are included. Work out the journey time for a typical commute, where you drive normally or like a madman on the motorway part, and include in the 30 mph parts.

Big time savings can be had by going a little faster at slow speeds though, because a few miles per hour faster then makes a big difference proportionally. That's why cycling is so much faster than walking. Even if you only cycle at 14 mph, this is still over 3 times walking speed, and a car is only twice as fast as that, in town.

There can't be many experienced drivers who haven't been done for speeding.

I drive the speed I want to based on the circumstances. IE What Im driving, the weather, the road, the level of traffic, my knowledge of the area, if Im late, if Im bored, if the music im listening to fires me up enough to have some fun.

A lot of the time the speed I decide to drive at is higher than the posted limit. Sometimes when that happens I get pulled.

So what. It's a tax, I pay it, and continue doing precisely what I was doing before.

Depends on the car and how many gears you have. I know for a fact I can hit the speed limiter in my car in fourth (yay living near silverstone ) and I have 6 gears to play with. I suspect cruising at 90mph in sixth will not use a noticeably different amount of petrol to cruising at 70 in fifth.

Only if you have a car that provides poor fuel consumption at slow speed, i.e. a design fault. There's no getting away from the physical fact that fuel consumption rises quadratically with speed (in a car), because that kinetic energy is lost to air molecules being deflected, and that the power required to maintain high speed goes with the cube of speed.

Yes I was doing 31 mph in a 30 mph zone. It was on an urban dual carriageway at 10am on a Sunday morning. The police augured in court on how it could be dangerous for school children but they had do withdraw that remark when I showed there was no schools nearby and the dual carriageway was fenced off. The fine reflected the fact that I agued the case in court for three hours and proved the police were liars on several accounts. An appeal would cost several thousand pounds and although I would win if I have a barrister there would be no guarantee of being awarded costs.

If anyone does not have any points for speeding, they only reason can be is they are not driving very high mileage or they are getting live updates for speed traps onto their SatNav.

Or that they actually speed when they deem it safe and appropriate to do so?

                Speeding

After 15 yrs of company cars, nearly 50 pts in total and a 2 month ban I have decided to use my own transport ie partner van. Not the fastest but reliable and speed trap friendly

A few years ago overtaking a pesky metro outside Streatham station at 1am. Didn't see the camera - 55 in a 30 and three points.

95 MPH on the M23. Cop car turned on his blue lights to warn me to slow down, but I was too pig headed. 3 points.

                  Gatso 3-points *2

                  happy days.

I've been done in the past for just about every motoring offence in the book except driving under the influence, but I've had a clean license for the last 10 years.
