People speeding on motorways should try working out the futility of the exercise. You gain little by driving at 90 mph rather than 75 (75/90=0.83), unless you are covering huge motorway distances, but your fuel costs are much higher. Even less time is saved when slow sections, getting to and from the motorway, are included. Work out the journey time for a typical commute, where you drive normally or like a madman on the motorway part, and include in the 30 mph parts.
Big time savings can be had by going a little faster at slow speeds though, because a few miles per hour faster then makes a big difference proportionally. That's why cycling is so much faster than walking. Even if you only cycle at 14 mph, this is still over 3 times walking speed, and a car is only twice as fast as that, in town.

) and I have 6 gears to play with. I suspect cruising at 90mph in sixth will not use a noticeably different amount of petrol to cruising at 70 in fifth.
