I suspect the reason the judges don't say that is because it is utter b****x.

The average time served by life sentence prisoners first released on life licence has gradually increased over the last decade from under 12 years in 1989 to nearly 15 years in 1999.

I think the Criminal Justice Act of 2003 also recommended a 15 yr minimum for single murders and the bulk discount ain't too appealing either.

I consider myself resonably liberal on such matters but was shcoked to hear the 6 years figure, especially from such a reputable source as some guy on the Internet. Still, benefit of the doubt etc. Where did you get the 6 years figure from, Cyberman?

In 1997 the average served for murder was 13 years (see below).

Minimum sentences as at 2004 below, from the BBC. Bear in mind that a prisoner can get 50% reduction for good behaviour and current leniency due to prisons being full, and the current average is probably around six years.

Good - I see we're getting to the bottom of it now. And where did you get that 6 years figure from again?

I read that in a separate report in the printed media about a year ago. It mentioned new legislation that Tony Blair had implemented to reduce sentences for murderers.

If a prisoner receives a minimum sentence of 10 years, it does not take much to calculate that if he behaves himself, then he could serve only 5 years with the 50% allowance, and the constant political pressure to empty prisons. 15 years = 7.5 and so on.

The real eye-opener though is that ACTUAL sentence SERVED under the Tories and up to 2000 was 13 years !! See chapter 5 of the document below.
