It was the idiotic behaviour of Major and Lamont that cost the UK billions not George Soros. He knew that Sterling was way over valued in the ERM with high interest rates that were constraining the economy too much and that it could not continue. He took a massive position and the market went with him. It was only the arrogance of Major and Lamont who believed that they could make a stand which cost us the money.

I remember seeing Lamont give that speech out side No. 11 and knew then that he would fold. Two hours latter – he had. In an interview as part of that TV series on the Major years it was clear that they had no idea what was happening or the power of the markets.

They were incompetent; this current mob is way, way worse than that.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

Senior Civil servants run the country and many have been in situ for years whatever the government and Norman took the wrong advice. George Soros didn't do this country any favours though, he put the pressure on the pound, he didn't follow the market, he made it. He knew it could bancrupt the country but he didn't give a flying.... he's no hero in my book. Nor is he responsible for anything other than linning his own pocket.
The court heard Darren Upton had written a letter to Judge Sally Cahill QC saying he wasn’t “a typical inmate of prison”.

But the judge said: “That simply demonstrates your arrogance continues. You are typical. Inmates of prison are people who are dishonest. You are a thoroughly dishonestly man motivated by your own selfish greed.”

        Are you atW in disguise?
Basically we should be glad that the markets forced Britain out of the ERM.
Why should Soros give a flying F*** anyway?
Another one who needs to go back to basics and read Adam Smith.

Who is doing the wind up? Soros was not to blame - it was those who tried to buck the markets. If he had not been there it would have happened a few weeks later.

I dont particularly like or dislike him - but I feel his title of "man who broke the bank of england" is undeserved.

Another one that would have him reponsible for other that he intended to do. I know the history, I know we entered the ERM too high, and George knew what he was doing too. A 3.4bln loss to the tax payer in one day doen't make him my hero.

PS I doubt Adam Smith would have lauded Soros either as he was fairly left of centre for the taste of most on this site.

Ah - our old pal Adam - whom I note recently had a wee statue erected on the Royal Mile in the fair city of Edinburgh - his statue is just across the road from his old pals statue David Hume.

Interesting but I never could come to terems with the Theory of Moral Sentiments. - which defines his philosophy more than The Wealth of Nations.

Contemporary accounts describe Adam Smith as an eccentric but benevolent intellectual, comically absent minded, with peculiar habits of speech and gait and a smile of "inexpressible benignity" He was known to talk to himself, and had occasional spells of imaginary illness.

Smith is often described as a prototypical absent-minded professor.

He is reported to have had books and papers stacked up in his study, with a habit he developed during childhood of speaking to himself and smiling in rapt conversation with invisible companions

At least Atw has something in common with him.
