Interesting tennis match the otehr night, after having to start at the bottom of the league again after taking some holidays, I resumed last week with some players I would expect to beat very easily.
My approach to this is to just play my own game, play the shots I would normally play and concentrate my game and not worry about the score. So I was drawn against this oldish lady who to be honest was compete and utter rubbish.
I could have been a complete ass and uses drop shots etc to make her look like a fool, but did not as I dont play the drop shot very often against better players so it wouldnt have been my type of game anyway. I was more worried about accuracy and hitting the ball deep and to the corners. I wasnt showing much emotion as it was a more of a practice than anything. Anyway.. its a case of first to 9 for these matches, and I got to 7-0 up. No great accomplishment as she was carp.
At the change of ends she decided to throw a bit of a hissy fit at me for not making more of a match of it and hitting the ball back to her so we could have 'more of a hit', she said I could continue playing as I was and make it a waste of time for her to attend or start playing nicer and make it worth her while.
I just replied that I was just concentrating on my own game.
Would you have lowered the standard of your game to facilitate her request or decided that a competition match is not the place to give someone else a practice.
By the way who gets promoted to the next highest league can be decided on a games countback if the matches won is even.. so techically we winning 9-0 might matter as opposed to winning 9-1 or 9-2.
I was talking to someone about this and they berated me for lack of sportsmanship, whereas when I play a competitive match, I play to win.
I once played in a company cricket match and one of the bosses fancied himself as a bowler. I think he played a bit in his youth, but being 40 odd and overweight, he was by now crap. He could put a bit of pace on it but no length at all. Now I'm no Freddie Flintoff but played to a decent standard at school. I was smacking this bloke all over the show and his mates (other fat bosses) were loving it. I thought at the time "Shall I go easy on this kn0bhead or keep humiliating him?" Needless to say I was the toast of the office for a few weeks after that.
Ah bollocks am I the only one who has voted to let her win one or two?
No, **** that. We lost the league on goal difference a couple of years back because we'd gone easy on the tulip teams (20-0), when other teams were giving them a proper caning (40-0) *.
If it's a league match, play to win at the best of your ability. If she wanted a social game, she shouldn't have joined the league.
* this is lacrosse, if you don't score 16-20 points a game, you've had a tulip one.
"See, you think I give a tulip. Wrong. In fact, while you talk, I'm thinking; How can I give less of a tulip? That's why I look interested."
If you had gotten your saus out and made a few 'mint sauce' comments and started playing in your wellies, within a few short minutes she would have gotten frisky and start to run around the court like a dervish.
You would have had a real contest on your hands and afterwards, who knows, maybe a bit of 'no mercy' howsyerfather behind the tennis courts
