I used to enjoy COBOL. With a decent editor and a scripting language "COBOL writer's cramp" can be a thing of the past.Originally posted by sasguru View PostOr Prolog, Lisp and C.
What's wrong with COBOL and Fortran anyway - good honest languages.
I too fancy a change, but not academia for me. Something with time spent outdoors sounds attractive, preferably in a spot with decent weather please.Behold the warranty -- the bold print giveth and the fine print taketh away.Comment

i used to specialise in further + higher education as a permie (VLEs and all that). work was great, treated very well (ie like an adult), loads of freedom, listened to by senior management, given cutting edge tech to play with, relaxed environment, conferences, travel, working with really smart committed people, knowing that you're contributing rather more to humanity than if you're cutting code for, say, BAE systems.....and yes, the annual totty influx is entertaining too.Originally posted by sasguru View PostI wouldn't mind. Money ain't good but that's not an issue for me. On the plus side you get to do interesting work and get an influx of hot totty every year.
absolutely terrible money though!Originally posted by BolshieBastardYou're fulfilling a business role not partaking in a rock and roll concert.Comment

Oh, how ghastly! And one knows that living in Islington and running a hybrid car and reading the Guardian, is SOOOOOOO expensive too!Originally posted by lambrini_socialist View Posti used to specialise in further + higher education as a permie (VLEs and all that). work was great, treated very well (ie like an adult), loads of freedom, listened to by senior management, given cutting edge tech to play with, relaxed environment, conferences, travel, working with really smart committed people, knowing that you're contributing rather more to humanity than if you're cutting code for, say, BAE systems.....and yes, the annual totty influx is entertaining too.
