Most people at the moment have no clue as to the seriousness of this situation, but it will all become clear over the next year or so as what was an avoidable recession truly bites, how big this black hole really is.
Constant failure to cut interest rates over the past few months can be laid firmly at Brown's door as he removed the opportunity for his government to control interest rates in 1997 by handing powers to the overcautious and thus inept MPC/BofE.
Manipulation of interest rates for purely political gains was a trick that Thatcher and Majors government used to do it's arguable that Lamonts tinkering with interest rates before and after an election precipitated a recession or at least high inflation that led to the recession.
I'm very happy that the Cabinet can't directly fart about with the Bank of England base rates any more.

It's also arguable that the Global economy is entering recession is that all down to our current Government?

Please understand that I don't personally support any party as I find all party politics to be corrupt, despicable and utterly contemptible.

The problam remains of what kind of left-wing government-ready party we will have. We will have one, or we don't have a democracy. The Left Wing is part and parcel of our society, our politics, and our country.

The ideal to my mind would be something like the German Social Democrats: although driven by a desire to correct injustice and poverty, they have admitted that pure socialism fails, because its effect on the economy drains the wealth-creation that is needed to build a better society. The Labour Party would not admit that in the 70s, and were out for a long time because of that. Blair's achievement was to get Labour to drop Clause 4, so that the country's left-wing aspirations would have a road to democratic government again; while keeping the desire for a better society. Unfortunately it seems to have got bogged down in the form over the results.

I don't know what's next: but a Tory-only Britain would be as much of a disaster as a socialism-only Britain. Perhaps we are just seeing the usual end-of-long-administration frothing and flapping: Labour will go into opposition, if past trends are anything to go by it will then commit mass electoral suicide (and only that will make the Tories look good, for a while), but then redevelop itself. Probably by stealing a bit more from the Lib Dems, who have easily the most interesting set of policies, but will never get a chance to represent them in Westminster government.

If we are going to have a proper left wing party (aka Communist Party) can we also please have an ultra right wing party to balance it out?

Neither is of any interest to the electorate (nor to me). But we do need a left-wing non-communist party, as we need a right-wing non-fascist party.

I don't know about "the buffoons", but many people will have voted for them as the nearest thing available to a Social Democratic party, by which I mean one standing for a successful mixed economy and active promotion of social justice. You get that in most of the more successful countries in Europe.

Yeah I remember people saying similar things about the Tories after 1997.

                    As do I.

It makes no difference what rosette the pillocks who get voted into Parliament wear, they're all equally useless.
