He can make his own life more comfortable, then he will appreciate his comfort a lot more than if I provide it for him.

Your view is akin to the "I give my children everything they could possibly want". Giving material goods and money to children is a sign of a parent that gives precious little else, which is in turn tantamount to child abuse.

If you do not understand the concept of my point I would imagine that you are more than likely a dysfunctional parent. Did you watch ITVs drama "children" last night? There are some interesting points made which are essentially about a clash between the selfish interests of the parents and the needs of the children. (Brillo did you watch it?)

Children, as I have said need time, attention, security, love and boundaries from their parents not money. IHT is a means to ensuring that parents who spoil their kids are made to pay a heavy price (in a currency -of money- that they understand)

If IHT relieves the tax burden on other more divisive taxes such as income tax and capital gains/corporation tax then so much the better.

What the govt does with the tax is another matter.

You might understand when you have a child.
How do you know I dont?

I pity your children when they find out you are giving all your money to the govt... that is what you are going to do right?

DA I have seen your house, if you are trying to tell us that your son worked his way up from the bottom, with no advantage based on his parents money... you are barking mate. Your son has already been advantaged financially above the norm.

Can either your or BP please confirm you are leaving nothing to your children.

Just to elaborate on the point that DP has made about freedom. If your son/daughter grows up and wants to go into teaching/nursing or any other dedicated profession that doesn't pay well, he might not be able to do that. Also being crippled by student debt - which luckily our generation has never had to face - but have you ever talked to a young graduate, they despise it!
If one doesn't want to leave cash - which may be squandered - then make a trust and give some property to each child, one to live in and maybe one to rent and get income from. Or as Peter Jones (Dragon's Den) suggested, a 'top-up' of 100% on their earnings from a trust.
I am sorry but you are going too far for me, but we sort of agree on this. By all means if a child goes into a profession that pays very little then of course I would help, but I would make sure that it was no more than is absolutely necessary.. a deposit for a flat maybe, paying for my grandchildrens education, certainly.

My son has plenty of advantages, virtue of a top education, a secure home.
But this does not spoil him. If he wants the same standard of living for himself then he can make the decision and work for it himself.

if like me he wants to go out and exploit thousands of contractors for personal gain he will probably be overqualified to do so

              Spoilt he isnt.

I never said he was spoiled. But he has been advantaged over others financially through your hard work / heartless pillaging. To be really fair we should all give our money to the govt as we earn it, and they distribute it, its only fair.....

                    Dammit I agree with DA.
I think the guiding principle is simple - pay for your kids anything that helps them to help themselves - education, maybe a deposit for their first property, but don't give them so much that they don't have to exert themselves somehow.
                    Hard Brexit now!

They should get the same financial standard of living as your son surely?
