No doubt I will be shouted at too! But I just feel the tories are going the wrong route. Most A/B vote Tory. D/E Labour. It is the C1 & C2 who decides the government. And alot of those will not stand to inherit a packet. And alot of them could become jealous of upper class favouritism.

You want New Labour to force the sale of all your assets (home, savings, etc) and have your family presented with a tax bill at your funeral and for the moeny taken to be spent on propping up other peoples debt who got greedy in the property boom?

Coming from someone who "reads" the Daily Mail that is a tad rich.

I dont think this strategy will be a big vote winner with the C1/C2. Particularly as falling house prices will put them under the current threshold.

Personally I would raise inheritance tax to 100% with a threshold of £0 - no exceptions for trusts etc.

Do that and watch in dismay as the wealthy people in their 50's and 60's suddenly start spending their savings like there's no tomorrow as their incentive to hold onto them has disappeared. You'll then end up with another boatload of elderly people on benefits.

Actually most will just relocate to somewhere like Cyprus, which has no inheritance tax at all. Maybe it's a good idea. All the rich living outside Britain, just leave all the chavs and immigrants behind here to fight it out.
