What exactly can Miliband do except posture ?
What would you have NATO do - issue a 1938 Polish style guarantee to Ukraine border integrity?
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

So you would allow Russia to invade any neighbouring state that it desires to control ? That sounds like 1939 all over again but without any action. Very dangerous and the West must not show weakness. It is better to initially to do some posturing than starting a war, but if a war of defence is required then we have no option. Russia will back down once it sees that Nato actually mean business. There is no shame in defending oneself and building a consensus within an alliance is the first step !!

Anything you read can be interpreted as you wish and it appears that you are biased towards Russia. If you believe that Russia is doing all of this purely to help South Ossetia etc, then fine, but I have read evidence and also posted a report a few weeks ago that South Ossetia via Russia provoked Georgia. It appears also that Western leaders and Nato believe this and thus are backing Georgia.

Basically, make your own mind up, but if you back a country that has no qualms about assassinating its own journalists and of course Alexander Litvinenko, that do not back its own propaganda, I despair.

The 'bloke' I heard this morning was David Milliband.

I'm quite open minded about all this actually. Do you have any links re the above? Would be interesting.

I was with you up to that point. I personally cannot see NATO, any other international institution or indeed, any nation, doing anything other than 'strongly condemn' Russia. They may get really peeved and follow up the condemnation with diplomatic posturing (i.e. I'm not talking to you right now). I certainly cannot see them pursuing any form of military action.
                    Older and ...well, just older!!

Start with this from a post of mine a few weeks ago:

The latest news from my Georgian friend right now is that the Russians have invaded Georgia from the sea ...Oh dear !!!

Also, Georgia attacked Ossetia after attack from Ossetia.... read this blog from a fighter.... so Russia apparently DID instigate this war:
