IT workers turn down permanent jobs

According to industry experts, a growing number of IT professionals are favouring contract work over permanent employment because of the better pay on offer. But this trend could possibly hamper IT and business alignment, they warn.

European IT recruitment firm Parity places IT professionals in both contract and permanent work but finds employers often opt out of hiring permanent staff because they cannot meet pay demands.

All the big blue chips are looking for permanent staff but they cant match the salary job hunters are asking for so in the end they have to go with the contractor option where firms have more flexibility in what they can pay, said Simon Page, Parity Resources director of permanent recruitment.

It's not just the pay demands but also the costs of National Insurance, sickness pay, holiday pay, pensions and associated perks related to permies that businesses also have to pay. In contrast, contractors come in, do the job with the minimum of fuss and then move on, reducing business costs. It makes perfect sense to hire contractors!!

Permanent salaries in my skill area have hardly improved in the past ten years but taxes and travel costs have escalated , so there certainly is no incentive to look for permanent work.

So many new pieces of legislation "protecting" permies, that employers are sick of the fact that the ladies get years off on maternity, and that bloke there is on long term "sick" for stress and that one there demands flexible hours to tend to their four kids and comes and goes as they please and everyones in a Union, and you can't do this and we demand that.

Employers, sack your useless permies and stock up on highly skilled, highly motivated professional IT contractors.
