I observed years ago when working on TVs that the neon in your mains testing screwdriver would light up if it was anywhere near a working Line Output Transformer (in fact it's a good test that it's working). Presumably an errant bird would light up too.

If you look at power lines, you'll notice that some have more than 1 conductor per phase.

This reduces the V/m around the cable to reduce the amount of corona.

275kv & 400kV lines generally have 4 conductors per phase.

It acts to increase the effective diameter of the cable from it's notional inch or so up to a foot or more.
