I observed years ago when working on TVs that the neon in your mains testing screwdriver would light up if it was anywhere near a working Line Output Transformer (in fact it's a good test that it's working). Presumably an errant bird would light up too.Originally posted by zeitghostNot on 400kV lines they don't... they don't like the corona discharge...Comment

Would they fit in my pants?Originally posted by zeitghostIf you look at power lines, you'll notice that some have more than 1 conductor per phase.
This reduces the V/m around the cable to reduce the amount of corona.
275kv & 400kV lines generally have 4 conductors per phase.
It acts to increase the effective diameter of the cable from it's notional inch or so up to a foot or more.

I think he means "dependent"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
