Actually, I find it slightly offensive when people use it like this - outside of the context of a particular type of behaviour, and as a broad brush against people from lower incomes.

I'd call it snobbery, cause it's become an accepted way for people from better off backgrounds to slag off others who're not, without being called a snob.

I was only explaining it's etymology as I understand it.

FWIW, I personally don't apply the word to hard-working, lower income types but layabout benefit scroungers who still find the money for a Burberry cap and Kappa shellsuit.

My definition of a chav is anyone (from any social background or creed or race) who behaves in any anti-social way.
Because I don't behave in that way, I feel justified in considering myself superior.

I'd agree with that definition. But it's become a catch all used to refer to anyone from a lower income background, by someone who's not. Most of whom I'd say don't deserve the label.

Fair enough, I'm not saying you do just that it's now being used in that way by some people, because it's kind of acceptable to now slag off 'lower income types', under the banner of calling them chav's.
