There was a bloke on telly last night who said he considered himself a chav and wouldn't be offended by being called a chav by someone who was dressed similarly to him, but he would be if someone dressed differently (presumably non-chav) called him a chav.

That's probably similar to american rappers using the word "******" to describe themselves, but are offended (quite rightly imo) when a white person describes them such.

It's all about reclaiming the language from the oppressor. Or Something.

Actually, I find it slightly offensive when people use it like this - outside of the context of a particular type of behaviour, and as a broad brush against people from lower incomes.

I'd call it snobbery, cause it's become an accepted way for people from better off backgrounds to slag off others who're not, without being called a snob.

The word is either offensive or it is not. It can not be both and stating that a white guy saying the N word is offensive is a racialist as the white guy saying the N word when a black guy can say the N word.

A snob is someone who believes he's better than others without any justification.
My definition of a chav is anyone (from any social background or creed or race) who behaves in any anti-social way.
Because I don't behave in that way, I feel justified in considering myself superior.
