On the same principle high interest rates are good for borrowers, and low interest rates are good for savers.

Borrowers. As I'm not one I'm glad the Bank has decided to go the low inflation, high interest rate route.

It has been argued in the past (I can’t be bothered to look up a citation) that increased fuel costs can alleviate the need to increase interest rates as it has the same effect (i.e. cooling demand) in the fight against inflation. Depends on how you measure inflation, of course; it’s one of those core/non-core inflation things.
How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror.

The best bit about banging my head against the wall is that warm fuzzy feeling when I stop.

Was this in the "Pisstake" section of the Beeb site?
